Multiple Sclerosis is somewhat mysterious, as the cause is not known for sure. It appears to be due to some inherited factors as well as environment. Scientists believe that it is an autoimmune disease of the fatty covering of nerve cells, but it is hard to replicate it in the lab with lab animals.

Multiple sclerosis is a multifactorial gene, meaning that its development is influenced by the environment and by genes. People with a genetic predisposition that are exposed to different things (e.g. certain viruses) are more likely to develop multiple sclerosis.
