Yes , they do mean Skate , just like str8 = straight , it's only a shortening , used often by youngsters , but I am very sure that it means SKATE

I very much doubt that they intend you to pronounce it as "skate". For one, it doesn't fit with the classic, stodgy image of the brand. Second, they also have an XK series, one of which is an XK8. Its just the way they name their car models.
