Likely because it is a trait that is inherited on the X chromosome. For a boy, who gets a Y from his dad, he gets his only X from his mother. Daughters are less likely to show symptoms because they have 2 X chromosomes, raising the ability to cope.
Kearns-Sayre is a mitochondrial disorder, not a sex linked trait. Only mothers pass it on to their children because only the egg's mitochondria remains after fertilization, because the sperm's mitochondria is in the tail, which is shot off after fertilization.
