You may be thinking of "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage", the poem by Lord Byron. It was published between 1812 and 1818. In this poem, Childe Harold is a young man who travels throughout Europe, seeing many of the landmarks, experiencing many different adventures. Some believe it is an autobiographical work.

He is known as Childe Harold and he is a character in the pilgrimage of a poem by George Gordon. You can find out more information about him on wikipedia but basically he was a pilgrim that led the way and he was true leader. That is why he is the subject of a poem.
