Koi will survive cold winters outside if you do your part. Clean the pond in the Fall. Stop feeding well before ice-over. Keep a hole in the ice with a de-icer or a heater, 2 hours each day. The pond must be 3 feet deep or more.

If you live somewhere in the cold it may not survive. Koi are fairly hardy and you should do research on the fish before buying them.

Most people who have Koi Fish that live in colder areas where it snows during the winter actually bring them indoors for the the winter and place them in large fish tanks. Make sure the tank is large enough for all of your fish to move around well. You can put them back in the pond during the spring.

If you are considering an outdoor koi pond, the most important aspect is making sure the pond is deep enough for the fish to survive the winter. Often ponds for koi must be dug 36 inches deep or deeper depending on which part of the country you are located in.

The pond had better be deep, so the fish will be safe from ice. A layer of ice on the surface is okay, the whole thing freezing is not!
