What do I need to know about raising koi fish?

I'd like to stock my aquarium with koi. What do they feed on, and how much space does each fish need?

You will need a minimum of a 75-gallon tank for koi fish. The typical rule is 1 inch of fish per 1 gallon of water. Koi can grow up to 24 inches in an aquarium, so only two or three would be suitable for a 75 gallon aquarium. They will eat regular koi pellets, available at most pet stores.

Koi need a good goldfish/koi food. Start with flakes and when larger switch to pellets. For each inch of fish, you need at least 1 gallon of water.

You must first start with a 75 gallon tank at the very least. A 75 gallon would be sufficient for two koi and for each addition koi, you will want to add 20 gallons of space. They will eat koi pellets and leafy greens.

Koi are interesting fish, they will not generally out grow their surroundings. That doenst mean to stuff your tank, in a 20 gal you could probably put 3. They eat goldfish flakes mostly and do fine. Just remember the bigger the aquarium the bigger the fish will grow

If you are wanting to stock an aquarium with koi, plan on a really big aquarium. Many koi average at about 8-12 inches full grown.
