What is the sentence in California for your first petty theft which is also your first offense?

If you're lucky, you can get your sentence commuted to parole and community service. In order to avoid jail time, you'll most likely have to hire a lawyer rather than using the free one provided by the court. Remember that California has a 3 strikes and you're out rule--so don't commit any more crimes.

Usually when it is your first offense the judge will go easy on you but their can be times when the judge has no mercy and you could potentially be charged with a felony and do jail time.
