The most common test performed to determine if a dog is underweight is to attempt to feel the rib structure. This may be difficult with a dog of dense hair, but if you can feel the ribs very distinctly, your dog is likely too skinny.

The best way to tell if your dog is to skinny is to feel the ribs. You should be able to feel the ribs with a layer of fat in between. You should not be able to see the ribs.

If you can see your dogs ribs and back bone chances are your dog is too skinny. Ask your Vet next time you go if your dog is too skinny.

The AKC describes a standard poodle to be over 15 inches high at the shoulders. Dogs are to be in the weight range of 45-75 lbs. Bitches are in the 45-60 pounds. You can often tell if your dog is under weight if you can run your fingers over the rib cage and feel each bone. Good luck.
