As a general rule, a dog is too skinny if its ribs are clearly visible and its backbone is easily palpable. Its weight is ideal if the ribs are palpable but not visible and light pressure is needed to feel its backbone. Be sure to take its breed into account, as some breeds run on the thin side.

Every dog is different and metabolism means that some dogs may need more or less than other dogs of their size or breed. Usually you do not want to see or feel any bones on the back, hips, or their ribs. You want the side of their body to be even all the way across and not dip.

You should be able to fairly easily feel his ribs, but you definitely shouldn't be able to easily see them.

You should be able to feel his ribs without actually seeing them. There should be a layer of fat over the ribs.

You say that´s each dog is different of the others, the dog´s breed can be one that the skinny is normal, and the metabolism is unique and works differently in each pet.
