Compound butter is fresh butter to which flavoring agents have added. Typical additions for flavoring compound butter are garlic and herbs that have been minced to a very fine consistency, after which the butter is formed, refrigerated again and served when it is firm.

A compound butter is a mixture of herbs or spices (or any other ingredients) stirred into or blended with cold butter, then re-molded and refrigerated until use.
