10 karat gold is 10 parts gold to 14 parts of an alloy, usually copper or brass- this is necessary as gold is a very soft metal- only 24 karat gold is pure gold- this is not at all useful or practical for jewelry. Americans prefer 10 or 14 karat gold, in Asia 18 or 22 karat is preferred.

10 karat gold is 5/12 part gold and-- typically-- 7/12 part semi precious metals. This semi precious metal in the US is typically silver. For red gold, the semi precious metal is an alloy of copper and silver. In purple gold, aluminum and gold is used (rare). This alloying of metal is done to reduce cost, add hardness and/or color.
