What happens to unclaimed payroll checks?

The employer is supposed to escheat the unclaimed payroll funds to the state. The state will publish a list of unclaimed funds so that people and entities can claim the money that is due to them. That is why employers want their employees to cash the payroll checks promptly so that the escheat process can be avoided.

they keep them for so long and then i think they shread them. they may try to distribute them to the next of kin.
