The overproduced heat may cause the electronic parts of the internal circuit board and the components to melt or failure to work properly. That's why a small fan is there.

Overheating a computer causes serious issues it usually starts with the silicon becoming a near liquid state(140+ Degrees F). Then parts mold together (190+ Degrees F) Finally a fire is started(After 320+ Degrees F) But most computers are equipped with an auto-turn off feature when it gets too hot.
