If you suffer from sciatica pain that does not respond to other treatment your doctor may give you an epidural injection of steroids to reduce the inflammation. The injection may last a week or up to a year.

The injection for sciatica has to do with the sciatic nerve. When performing this procedure a needle is injected into the spine with steroids. This is done in a clean area where the person has an injection of corticosteroid to help relieve pain. The shot works for months on some people and longer for others.

A common treatment for sciatica is epidural steroid injection. This is performed under sterile technique with light sedation. Steroids are injected into the back to help reduce inflammation and pain.

It will be in the lumbar spinal space and be a combination of a steroid and a local anesthetic, to reduce inflammation and therefore pain. Three injections may be prescribed.
