What can you do if your spruce is dead near the trunk?

If it's dead near the trunk and there are no branches below the dead part then, sorry, there is no way to save the spruce. And, you cant graft trunks.

Try to take the outside layer and see how deep the affection is. If the harm is done in the trunk also you can't do anything to save the tree.

If it seems to be only the branches that are dead then you want to cut them off all the way back to the trunk, leaving only about a half inch nub remaining. This should send all nutruients past the dead limbs and to the healthy part of the tree.
