Spruces dont generally need to be pruned. if it is getting too tall you can cut the top off up to a foot.

All you need to do when prunning these is to just trim the stray branches back so they are the same as the rest of the tree so it looks rounded and nice.

Spruce generaly do not tolerate severe pruning. If a compact tree is desired then as thre tree is growing, the "candles" or new bud growth should be pinched off.Do not use sharp knives or cut.if the end bud is removed, growth on that shoot will stop and only sideways growth from existing branches will occur.

Most evergreen trees (yes that includes spruce trees) do not need pruning, but if you do prune the tree, be careful as pruning can cause bushier growth. To remove branches, make sure you are very careful not to expose too much wood that is under the bark. It would be best to apply a protective paste over the resulting stump.

It is best to begin pruning after dangerous cold weather has left the environment in the area. Also, tree paints used to dress pruning wounds should not be used for spruce as they can be harmful. Trying to keep a natural shape is important to pruning as the tree can begin to look awkward if not properly trimmed.

It is better to do summer pruning. It is suggested when the fruit is marble-sized. Do not prune after mid August.
