If the unit is humming and not working then call for service. If the humming was never there and has just occurred call for service. If the unit operates properly, you have always heard the noise and was just curious, its probably the normal hum from your control voltage transformer.

This noise should cause concern. The fan motor may be locked and can cause the motor to burn. This can be a costly repair if not caught. Turn the unit off or the breaker to the air handler and call a professional to evaluate the problem. Any strange noise coming from the blower fan should be cause for concern.

Yes you should be. That can be telltale signs of electrical failures. It can also mean the motor on the blower fan is going out or locking up. You should call a company to come check it out or at least check it out and make sure it's coming on properly.
