Should only be done by a qualified mechanic. Direct replacement part from manufacturer is best, but most likely only available through wholesale distributors. Next best is to match: Voltage, Horsepower, RPM, rotation, Frame Size, Enclosure type and Service Rating. Install a new capacitor as well. Not for the novice!

I would purchase a basic "trouble-shooting" kit. This includes a temperature gauge, a set of sockets, and allen wrenches designed for Hvac units. Your AC manual has a bi-unit schematic.

The best thing to do is to pull of the front panel and find the bolts that are holding the motor on. You will then need to take the wiring harness off and remove the bolts holing the motor on. You may need to get a new harness if the new motor does not hook up right.

The fan motor or blower assembly is usually a single piece. Purchase a new one for the model of AC unit you have, and then unbolt and unhook all of the wires on the old unit. The new one fits in exactly the same way and hooks up similarly.

If you want to remove it then remove the power wires, several mounting bolts and the fan. Then place the new one properly.

Well, it depends on which fan motor, the one in the air handler or the one in the condensing unit. Just making noise might mean there is something in the fan, but you didn't describe the noise, more details are necessary.
