Answer by  Thiacin (41)

Policosanol is considered a dietary supplement, and as such is not regulated by the FDA. However, it is known to cause "thinning" of the blood. Do not take policosanol if you have a bleeding disorder (e.g. hemophilia), or if you are pregnant or may become pregnant. Do not take policosanol if you are on other prescription medications.

Policosanol is a dietary supplement and not regulated by precription. With that said, do not take this is you have a bleeding disorder. This medication thins the blood as part of it's process and can cause a danger of bleeding. Consult your doctor before taking this medication. Do nor assume that it is safe.

skin rashes, migraine, insomnia, gastrointestinal upsets and other side effects are uncommonly reported and there may be some enhancement of anti blood-clotting medication but policosanol so far seems reasonably trouble free.
