What is the drug methergine prescribed for?

My wife's obstetrician prescribed her this drug after she gave birth. What is it for, and are there any side effects?

It is used to prevent and control post partum bleeding. Side effets include hypertension,nausea, and vomiting. It is rare but also causes leg cramps, dizziness and hallucinations.

Methergine is used to firm muscles of the uterus to halt bleeding after delivery of the placenta. Side effects are usually headache, nausea, and dizziness. Could also cause vomiting.
