Hamilton represented the commercial interests while Jefferson represented the agrarian interests. Commercial interests required a strong federal government, sound monetary and educational systems. Agrarian interests required cheap labor (slaves), strong states rights, and cheap money. Both favored strong national defense.

It appears that Jefferson believed in states rights and of rights for the common man. Hamilton wanted a strong central government and believed in the taxation system. Jefferson's party was suspicious about a purely capitallist system while Hamilton was the opposite.
