What do I need to know before I compare roofing shingles for my home?

What geographical or other conditions must I consider while comparing and purchasing shingles?

Geographically, asphalt shingles are a good choice pretty much anywhere. Your biggest consideration should be the appearance you want and the pitch of your roof. Durability is another factor to consider. The coloring of your roof can be important to, as a dark roof retains more heat than a light colored roof.

First you might consider your weather enviroment, there are lots of different weather related hazards that may occur, that can affect different kinds of shingles. Then you would need to know how many square feet you might need. The design, texture and color you are looking for. Also consider how long of a warranty is offered for the product.

Roof shingles are affected by several meteorological conditions: precipitation per year and the heating and cooling to which it will be subjected.

Sun, wind and snow/ice are the major considerations. Tiles work best in extreme sun like Southern Florida. For extreme wind conditions, steel seems to work best. Steel also works well with extreme snot and ice conditions. In the absence of extreme conditions, asphalt shingles work fine.

A lot depends on where you live. In the woods or on the beach? The warranty varies. You can get a shingle with a twenty five year warranty or a lifetime warranty. Additionaly there are differant shapes (archetectual , three tab etc.. )
