The prototypes originally were in the $50,000 USD range. By the late 1970's you could find a VCR for around $5,000. In the 1980's they cost about $1200-$1500 USD.

When vcrs first came out they were big like any other elctronic device that came out. I would say the cost was between $200 and $400.

Earlier the VCRs costed were around 4k-5k Rs (INR). They were little more big then our TV set top boxes or cd players.

In the 1970's, Panasonic made a VCR that cost $5000 and was 27 x 9 x 20 inches in size. Like most technology, time has shrunk both their size and cost.

they were around $300 in 1985 (it was actually quite a purchase) ($300 adjusted for inflation in 2012 is $586.83 - quite a chunk of change)
