620,000 Americans lost their lives during their Civil War. Of those 620,000 deaths, 260,000 were confederates and 360,000 were Union Americans. Although the numbers were so high, only about 200,000 of those deaths were combat related; the other 420,000 deaths came from other factors such as diseases which ran rampant during non-combat times.

It is estimated that 260,000 Confederate soldiers and 360,000 Union soldiers died. However, not all these deaths were from combat; many soldiers died from disease.
