Get yourself and the child in a comfortable position where you can easily see or hear her breathing. Count the number of breaths a child takes in 30 seconds. Multiply that by two and you'll have your child's respiratory rate.

Each time a child inhales then exhales is counted as one repiration. Using a second hand on a watch count the repirations for one minute.

Respiration is often measured by how many breaths a child takes in a minute. A respiration is one in and out breath. Often it is considered prudent to measure only for 30 seconds and double the answer. Many children find it difficult to sit still and breathe for the full minute.
