Will you have an elevated white blood cell count with HIV?

My white blood count is high, could it be HIV?

No. All viruses including HIV destroy white cells, and therefore white cell count is low. Viruses introduce their DNA in the white cell's DNA (host cells )making them to work for the virus, and destroying the white cells.

HIV would not cause an elevated white blood count because white blood cells fight infection. Their presence indicates that your body recognizes an infection and is fighting it. Since HIV destroys your ability to fight infection or display appropriate immune response to illness, a high white blood count would not indicate HIV infection.

so, if you have a single episode and maybe exposed to hiv, after many years if you have a cold and you have high white blood count does not indicate infection?  add a comment

White blood cells fight infection in the body. In patients who have HIV, the white blood cell count tends to be lower than normal. HIV patients have compromised immune systems, so their white blood cells are not doing the job they would assume in a healthy body. The WBC is not an indicator of the presence of the HIV virus.

Yes it will. But your white blood cell count gets high anytime you get sick, even with a cold. If your not feeling to sick you can consult your physician for further help to see whats going on.

When your body is fighting an infection the WBC will lower. If you are looking at your blood work to try to determine if you have HIV then you need to look at the WBC count, the Ly%, Ne%, Mo%, Eo%, Ba%, and platelet count.  add a comment
