How do they figure an earthquake's magnitude?

The magnitude is most often measured by the Richter Scale, which uses a mathematical equation to arrive at a number which is the magnitude. It has to do with the amount of shaking that occurs during an earthquake. The higher the number, the bigger the earthquake.
