Try to test yourself by running 10-15 miles on three consecutive days. If you can get through that, you should be fine. Adrenaline will take care of you on race day.

Generally, you should have been running regularly for at least a couple of years, and have completed a few shorter races (5k, 10k). Your body needs time to adjust gradually to the intense demands of running a marathon. Talk to a trainer or doctor if you have any health concerns.

You know that you are fit to run a marathon if you can run for a long period of time such as two hours or so and not run out of breath or quit. If you stop during the two hours, you won't be able to run the marathon.

A marathon consists of different mileage amounts to be run. If you are going to run a short distance (1-5 miles) You can attempt to run that distance and see if you can do it. A longer marathon (5+ miles) requires building endurance and running long distances daily.
