Steroids are given for a short period of time to combat acute inflammation. Eyes, nose, and throat are connected enough that the inflammation of your sinuses are affecting your eye. The doctor wants to stop the inflammation so it doesn't spread any further.

Steroids can help reduce swelling. They also boost the effectiveness of your immune system. Your eye pressure and sinus pain is probably caused by swelling in your infected sinuses. Make sure you follow prescription directions precisely.

A lot of that eye pressure and sinus pain comes from inflammation. Sometimes if inflammation is bad enough steroids are used to reduce it. It is perfectly safe (I've had steroid shots for bursitis in shoulders) and should help tremendously.

Steroids are actually useful drugs, when used properly, and are commonly prescribed. For your symptoms, they were probably prescribed to combat an allergic reaction. However, there are also other possibilities; steroids are actually legitimately used very frequently.

Steroids, if used judiciously, can work anti - inflammatory and in cases where the doctor wants to control sinus inflammation, may prescribe steroids in a limited dose that has to be reduced by tappering off. Inflammation can be in eyes also and either of these are likely to be life threatening.
