Alcoholism/addiction is genetically linked so you'll find proclivities among certain groups. The incidence of depression is high, too, and that tends to be the other side of the alcoholism coin.

There is a large alcoholism rate among Native Americans because there is also a high depression rate in this population. It is commonly known that depression can lead to heavy alcohol use and consumption. This is the case with Native Americans in the United States. Many reservations have programs to counter this.

The rate of alcoholism is high among Native Americans because many live on reservations, where employment prospects are few, and there is a great deal of depression because of the plight they find themselves in.
