Why is oil sometimes called petrol?

Or is that gas?

Oil is generally not referred to as petrol, although is some circumstances it may be as it is technically a petroleum product. In certain English speaking European countries such as Britain that use the word petrol to refer to what Americans would call gas or gasoline. They also refer to gas stations as petrol stations.

petrol is gas. its what the people in the UK call it. petrol stands for petrolium, and its just how they call it in the UK
