The origins are not clear, but date to the mid-1800s. Some think it is reference to the French word "chaud," (sounds like "show") which means "hot. "

Java Operates Employee's Everyone loves coffee and some people need coffee in order to function or operate during their working hours. JOE stands for the abbreviation above "Java Operates Employee's" meaning JOE is what makes coffee addicts, like myself, capable to roll out of bed in the morning!

Good question. Coffee is a drink for the common man. Joe is a name for the common man. Thus, "having a cup of Joe" implies that you are sharing a morning ritual with other people. On the other hand, it is entirely possible that somebody named Joe first invented coffee.
