Question by  altos (224)

Why does nail polish turn my nails yellow?

My nails are actually more of a brown-orange color but I they weren't before I started wearing light-colored nail polish all the time. I'm now giving them a week or two of "breathing time" in between new nail polish applications and hoping that helps.

Formaldehyde in nail polish can cause the nail to turn yellow. I don't think there are polishes out there without formaldehyde though.

If you wear nail polish constantly, your nails can turn yellow because they aren't getting enough oxygen. Let your nails have some time off between polishes to help. Next time you put on polish, apply a clear base coat first to also help reduce yellow nails. You may also want to try a new polish to see if that helps.

Dark colored nail polishes can leave behind some of the color, thereby staining the nail.

A good base coat before the colored nail polish might help prevent this cause.  add a comment

Nail polishes can turn the nails yellow. It is not a major problem though. There a more than one reason for this. Usually the darker coloured polishes cause this problem. A chemical reaction happends between the colorant and nail plate making the nail yellow. Formaldehyde present in the nail polish can also trun the nails yellow
