Diesel is used for more things than gasoline; it fuels large trucks, trains, nearly every ship afloat today, agricultural equipment, and so forth. Gasoline is mostly used by consumers and thus there is less demand.

Historically diesel was cheaper than gas; however, due to higher worldwide demand and insufficient refining capacity as well as higher Federal excise tax, diesel fuel became more expensive.

Simple answer is becasue they can. But really it is becasue of demand as more people buy diesel trucks and manufactures put them in cars makes for simple economics. It shouldn't cost more as it is a byproduct from refining crude oil into gasoline.

The biggest factor is the cost of crude oil. When it fluctuates it changes the cost of both fuels about the same. The main difference between the prices is due to demand. Diesel has a different amount of demand than normal gasoline so the price can be higher at times.

In the past, diesel fuel had a simpler and less costly refining preocess, and therefore was prices lower at the pump. Unfortunately, federal regulations requiring teh removal of sulpher during the refining process is driving the price of diesel up. In additon, diesel has summer to winter fluctuations that regular lacks.

There are a few reasons the excise tax is higher than gas, the demand is higher, and the new low sulfur regulation make production prices higher.

Because Diesel is actually a Bi-Product created from the production of refined consumer fuel, It in turn takes more to refine itself after the actual collection process has taken place.

Diesel used to be cheaper, though not sure by how much. It is used in trains, large trucks and boats so the many applications may have an affect on it.
