Why do people wear shark's tooth necklace?

Isn't that the same as wearing fur?

Not even close. Fur is usually made from a hunted animal. Sharks teeth naturally fall out and wash up on shore. They can be collected by anyone and strung together. These necklaces can be worn for luck, or often just to give one the feeling that they are carrying a piece of the beach with them.

I think it's just a fad, the sharks tooth necklace was popular in the 80's, and it's back again. It will phase out again soon I'm sure.

km8738 is absolutely correct. Shark's go through VERY MANY teeth, and naturally people are going to find them washed up on shores and in the sand. Animals are hunted for fur. Shark teeth are simply found. Sharks are not hurt for their teeth like animals are for their fur.

It is not a fad.....Islanders revere sharks as Gods who protect them and their homeland. Surfers wear a sharks tooth tethered to their ankles to pay homage to the Shark Gods and to keep them safe.
