If your hermit crab remained outside of its shell for too long, this could be the cause. Hermit crabs are very sensitive animals that have trouble living anywhere where the environment isn't exactly perfect for its living condition. If the temperature was too cold, this could have shocked the crab while it was out of its shell.

Hermit crabs die for a lot of reasons. After molting, it needs a larger shell for a new home. If that shell is not immediately available, the crab will die. They cannot survive without a shell/home. They also die easily without the right diet, or without available water to crawl through.

Molting is a very stressful time, but first are you SURE its dead? they can be very limp and lifeless during molting, also the exoskeleton can look like a dead crab, but he might be hiding inside the shell. dont handle during molting, too stressful and that could kill him.
