Why did Elton John wear weird sunglasses?

I'm guessing that to start with he liked to where them. But later others liked them and caught other peoples attention. Then it became a part of his act.

At the time it was considered a trademark for a rock star to do something quirky. Michael Jackson had the flashy outfits and rhinestone glove, and Kiss had their strange black and white make-up. It was the same thing with Elton John.
