Love trumped all for Edward VIII. He wanted to marry American socialite Wallis Simpson, who was deemed unsuitable because she'd been twice divorced. Many in Edward's inner circle also believed Mrs. Simpson was motivated by greed, not love. Edward was forced to choose, and in 1936, he chose Wallis; their subsequent marriage lasted until his death 35 years later.

The public and people close to the king widely expressed their disapproval of the king's decision to marry Wallis Simpson whose background was contrary to the royal family's marriage requirements.
