Why are SpongeBob SquarePants' parents round?

The writers thought it would be both ironic and funny if Spongebob SQUAREpants was different from his parents who inevitably are round.

Spongebob parents, Mr Harold and Mrs Claire SquarePants are designed to looked like a sea sponge (natural sponge) while unfortunately, our friend, Mr Spongebob SquarePants is designed to looked like a kitchen-washing-sponge. As commonly known, kitchen sponges are square while natural sea sponges are round or curvy.
