Actually going to see a movie in a theatre is the last step in the movie process. Advertisement, salaries, and the cost of making the movie all is paid first.

Movie theater ticket costs are set by the individual theater chain. As more movie viewers have moved away from watching movies in the theater to watching them at home on high quality DVD and Blu-Ray discs, the chains have been forced to raise their prices in order to remain profitable.

Film-making is very expensive. A low-budget film costs $30,000 to $500,000. Hollywood films cost $5,000,000 to $300,000,000. Even at current ticket prices, most films don't turn a profit.

Movie theater tickets are so expensive due to the cost of the theater itself (sound system, screens, etc.), along with the salary of the employees, taxes on the land, etc. In addition, movies are very expensive to make, when you consider the salaries of all of the parties involved, distribution of the film, advertising, etc.
