The origin has ancient roots spanning many cultures. In Scotland, iron was used as protection against faeries and other malevolent entities. There is a Christian myth of St Dunstan who caused Satan great pain by shoeing his hoof, saying he'd take it off only if the Devil promised never enter a place where a horseshoe is fixed over the door.
