The first person to invent a ballpoint pen was John Loud in 1888; however, his pen was somewhat crude and did not become a success. The first commercially successful ballpoint pens were made by László Bíró and Juan Jorge Meyne. These pens, which were first sold in Argentina, are the ancestor of the modern ballpoint pen used worldwide.

The first patent awarded for the ballpoint pen was issued to John Loud in 1888. Some credit the astronomer Galileo with making the first ball point in the 17th century.

John Loud, an American leather tanner patented what he called a "roller-ball-tip" marking pencil in 1888. Hungarians Ladislas Biro and his brother, Georg, improved the invention and ink.
