Tax returns contain many elements of personal and sensitive information. They should only be visible to you, your immediate family, your professional tax preparer (if applicable), and the Internal Revenue Service.

Anyone involved in the preparation of your return, including technical personnel, may see your return. Also, the IRS, and anyone to whom you give WRITTEN PERMISSION.

Tax returns are confidential. Obviously, the IRS has the right to it, and most government agencies can access it, with the proper authorization. If it's a joint return, your spouse has access to it. That's it, unless you chose to give someone a copy of it. Some lenders need to information on it, but can only get that from you.

You have the right to see it. Anyone you file jointly with can see it. The tax preparer, if hired, can see it. The IRS can review it.
