Some greats are Billy Preston (studio musician for the Beatles, also had a solo career), Steve Winwood (several bands, including Traffic, plus solo career), Gregg Allman (Allman Brothers Band), David Bryan (Bon Jovi), Dennis DeYoung (Styx), Ray Manzarek (The Doors) and most of the keyboardists who have played for Yes and Supertramp in their changing line-ups (Rick Wakeman, Rick Davies).

When you're talking about a best player of a given instrument, it's often a matter of taste. Not everyone can agree on style, songs their bands had, etc. But some names that everyone loves are Keith Emerson (ELP), Kevin Moore (Dream Theatre), Richard Wright (Pink Floyd). They're both proficient and creative keyboard players!

They are best found in rock music's past. Greg Allman of the Allman Brother's Band; Keith Emerson from Emerson Lake and Palmer; Pick Wakeman from Yes; Ray Manzarek from the Doors, playing the bass line as well; and finally Richard Wright from Pink Floyd. There are many more, but I believe these are the seminal figures.

Ray Charles, Rick Wakeman, Steve Winwood, Brian Eno, Greg Allman. My favorites are Elton John and Billy Joel although they are not the rockers of today, they are the best.

There are some people that you don't think about, like Peter Townsend (better known as a guitarist) and John Paul Jones (better known as a bassist). Mostly, the best regarded players are (or were) session men like Don Airey, Francis Monkman (also a good guitarist! ), Guy Chambers, David Foster and Michael Omartian. Those in "the biz" know best...
