Rice is the first choice as it is the most hypoallergenic. Technically either is fine. I am a nurse and I do not feed any ceral to my babies. If given to young it can cause a bowel impaction, because they do not have the enzymes to digest it.

if this is baby's first solids, go with a veggie or fruit first. sweet potato, squash and avacado are the perfect texture and are full of nutrition and taste. rice is bland, not very good for you and boring. most babies dont like it - it can cause constipation too.

Technically the oatmeal is better. It's a whole grain and will keep them fuller than the rice cereal. But, if you are just starting the baby out on cereal you should try the rice cereal first so the baby can get used to the heavier than formula consistancy

It is better to start your child off on rice cereal, as it is easier to digest and less likely to cause an allergic reaction. Then after a week or so, you can introduce oatmeal, which has more fibre.

The introduction to solid food should be rice cereal, only later when the baby is bigger and used to solid food, oatmeal can be introduced. Rice cereal is soft and creamy and much easier for a baby to process.

Baby rice cereal is better for your baby than oatmeal to to the easy of digestion. Both are nutritious but oatmeal is harder to digest due to expansion that occurs while in body.
