There is no single vehicle out that can be consider the safest car around really. Newer car are rated by various places like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. So you can go to there individual sites and see what cars are ranked in specific categories like side impact and rollovers.

There is no single car that is the safest. Trucks do well in impacts but are more likely to roll. Cars are the opposite. Best is the 5 star rating.

Hummer is the safest car since it is very stable even when at high speed and since it is designed for defense purpose, it will also be hard against aggression.

Renault has a 5 star NCAP safety rating so i would strongly suggest one of their cars. Don't go for a hatchback because it usually turns down the rating by a star. Check out the new Renault Laguna with their new 4 wheel control. It makes the rear wheels steer with or against the direction for extra safety and control.

In the EU, look for cars with a 5star rating on the EuroNCAP test. In the US, look for reports that the NTHSA or NTSB have issued. It's worth mentioning that there is no such thing as a safest car, seeing as driver awareness plays a large role in driving.
