If you plan to live in the city, the Franklin Park area is nice though it is expensive. If you In Chicago's suburbs I like the cities for Brookfield, Elmhurst, Oakbrook, and Addison. If you have children then the Naperville, Plainfield, and Northbrook areas are where the best schools are located.

I was going to suggest the northern suburbs. My sister lives in Winthrop Harbor close to the Wisconsin border. Everyone seems to like it there. It seems like the best areas of Chicago metro are in that vicinity. Most of the south burbs aren't that great but some close ones to Indiana which aren't that bad maybe Glenwood.

Wrigleyville is the best place to live in Chicago. It is so much fun during baseball season. It is a party every time the Cubs play!

Personally, I would choose the burbs if you can. Cook county sales tax is something insane like 10%, and depending on where you live, it can be not very safe.
