K2 is in the Karakoram range, in the Himalayas. The name came from a British survey which numbered the peaks in the range. K2, very remote, had no local name.

It is the world's second highest mountain, after Mount Everest. K2 (8,611 m/28,251 ft) is located at the border between China and Pakistan. The original surveyor; Thomas Montgomery, was standing on the Mount Haramukh (210 km to the south) when he sketched the two most prominent peaks of the Karakoram mountain range; Karakoram1 (K1) and Karakoram2 (K2).
