It derives from the Caucasus region of the Russian states originally and is used to describe one of the three early classifications of human alongside Mongoloid and Negroid. Its meaning in America has been diluted in modern times to something like "white person" or "person of European origins".

The word "Caucasian" was originally used to refer to someone from the Caucasus Mountain region around the border between Europe and Asia (near the present-day countries of Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan).
