Real estate is less expensive in areas removed from urban center. Rural America, particularly in the midwest and in the south, still have excellent real estate bargains. "Cheap" is a relative term that you must define for yourself.

First you should consider how much you could afford and work from that point. Suburbs of a certain area are always going to be cheaper than living in the city.

You can buy a fairly large house at auction in Detroit for fairly cheap, but most will be stripped of copper and need major rehab. Other areas in the Midwest are inexpensive as well.

By far, the cheapest place for real estate is Detroit, MI where they can't hardly give the homes away and a bulldozing whole subdivisions. But then, there aren't any jobs there. Idaho seems to have jobs and homes that are very appealing to many, as well as Texas and Tennessee.

I would have to say that the North Dakota is by far a very cheap place to buy real estate in, but a downfall may be that you cant get a great return.

Well, I'd say smaller towns, though if you mean specifics I believe the Midwest. Of course, it also depends on the size of the town. Larger towns will have higher price tags because people will be willing to pay more and can. As for smaller towns, that may not be the case, especially if it is a rural community.

Most small towns in the midwest are the cheapest places to live. You can get a 2 story 4 bedroom house for 50k if you look hard enough. Places like iowa are out of the recession and still maintain cheap real estate with larger profits.
